The 32nd Annual General Meeting will be held in the Upper Room in Cheam Library from 8 pm. After the business part of the meeting Friends are invited over the road to Whitehall for refreshments. Papers are now available. This year is the election of the Chairman and Hon. Treasurer.

                                                Chairman's 2009 Report

Another year of fundraising has been completed and although the amount raised was less than the previous year we have to take into consideration the current economic situation and the low interest rates.

Our events followed their usual sequence, a Tudor fair in July Words, Witches and Wonderful Wares at Halloween, The Mistletoe Craft and Gift Market in November. Then followed our Christmas Entertainment "A Stocking Full of Christmas" and finally the Christmas Coffee morning with the house smelling of mince pies, spices and the evergreen decorations which enhance the house at Christmas time.

In January came the annual Jumble sale followed by the Valentine and Easter fairs. A St. George's day celebration was held in the evening with entertainment by the Whitehall Singers and Readers. None of these events would happen without people and thanks are due to all committee members for their unstinting help. Thanks are also due to Valary Murphy and our new curator Laura Allan. Another valued helper is our garden friend, Heather Candamio who keeps the front garden in splendid shape. The back garden has a severe problem with ground elder, which we hope to have dealt with later in the year. My thanks to Helen Ellis as vice-chairman, to Philip Holliday as treasurer, Barbara Whisson as membership secretary, Derek Betts as web master and Daphne Wood as our book stall lady.

I would not have survived the last six years without their support. No. I have not forgotten Carol Jenkin, our hard working secretary who has done her best to keep me on the right path, my grateful thanks to her. My good wishes to your new Chairman and to all the Friends of Whitehall.

                 Past Events

A Stocking Full of Christmas, started the the festive events with thanks to the Whitehall Singers and Readers.

Late Night Shopping, was much quieter than last year, with poor weather and a total lack of support from any of the shops in the village. A steady stream of visitors enjoyed the stalls and hot drinks with warm mince pies in the tea room.

The Friends Christmas Coffee Morning, a growing success story and a very popular Friend's event, which was rounded off with the Christmas Draw for the Hampers. See the result on the Home page.

The Easter Fair in the Parochial Rooms, this event went very well with over £300 raised on the Friend's stalls and the raffle plus a similar amount for rent from the other stallholders

On the 21st May 2007 our website went live and since then 12,550 visitors have logged into the site, and that figure does not include those visitors who were directed to a page of the website via a contact on another site.

The site has grown since the launch, with extra pages and more information available. A lot of the additional material has been made available to help schoolchildren with information for their homework. If we keep them interested in Whitehall's history they may even grow up and become Friends themselves. The site often receives emails from children thanking us for helping them with their homework.

The site also receives quite a lot of emails from visitors who use the Contact page. These have included visitors wishing to book children's parties or wishing to have a stall at one of our events. But the site has also received some quite interesting emails.

A lady emailed from America to say that she was visiting the UK and wanted to book a ticket for and Alison Weir talk. This was arranged and some of us had the opportunity to meet her at the talk and she was given a guided tour of the house.

Another email was received from America from a gentleman who said that when he lived in the area he often admired Whitehall from the outside and having left the UK over twenty years ago he was delighted to discover that the house was still thriving and asked us to keep up the good work.

A gentleman who lives in Lesotho e-mailed to say that he was born in Cheam and was educated at Sutton County (now Sutton Grammar) School, and visited and studied at Whitehall and used to know the Misses Muller who lived at Whitehall. His parents were married at St. Dunstan's church in 1931 and he remembers well the late Rector of Cheam, Canon W S Hayman, MA.

The site has received requests for information on various historic houses within the Borough and with the generous help of the Archive department at Sutton Library we have nearly always managed to supply extra facts - unfortunately we could not help the gentleman who asked who was featured on the statues standing outside the Home Office in Whitehall.
